Samenvatting (Engelstalig)

Coastal dunes play an important role in protecting inland areas from flooding and providing habitat for many species. My PhD research investigates how dunes develop, focusing on the interactions between natural conditions such as rainfall and soil moisture, and the plants that establish and grow on the dunes. The results show that soil moisture is especially important in the early stages of dune formation, as it helps vegetation take root which supports dune growth. My research findings contribute to a better understanding of dune development and can support more effective management of coastal areas which are under increasing pressure from climate change and human activities.
