This theme is highly relevant as global fisheries are on the verge of collapse, threatening marine ecosystems, coastal livelihoods, and food security. The film emphasises the urgency of activism to stop the industry's actions, with relentless persistence.
While the documentary effectively shows the destructiveness of industrial fishing and the emotional loss of natural beauty, it also reveals tensions between artisanal and commercial fishermen. The story raises questions about cultural biases, the oversimplification of solutions and the lack of focus to the socio-economic drivers of illegal fishing, and offers a thought-provoking perspective on a complex issue.
Gibbs Kuguru, shark scientist, National Geographic Explorer and TV presenter, brings his expertise to the discussion around Activists vs Fish Industry. The documentary is meant to be an environmental thriller exploring the dark depths of the fish industry in Southeast Asia. The documentary follows investigative journalist Matt Blomberg and ocean activist Paul Ferber as they risk everything to stop illegal fishing and establish a marine protected area. Alongside their efforts, a new generation of Cambodian environmentalists emerges, driven to create a better future for their people.
With his background in shark science, fisheries management and marine conservation, Gibbs will explore key themes of the documentary, such as the devastating effects of illegal fishing, the tension between conservation and livelihoods and the crucial role of local activism. Gibbs will share his vision of how community-driven projects and environmental management can actually change marine ecosystems, drawing on his background in both science and storytelling.
The documentary's heart and admirable intentions to protect the environment are acknowledges, but also the challenges of creating long-term impacts will be addressed. From his experience in shark fishing and marine conservation, Gibbs will highlight the need for systematic solutions; solutions that take into account socio-economic factors, sustainable livelihoods and stronger policies that go beyond local activism.

]]>The documentary questions how colonialism was expressed in practice, including resistance to Dutch oppression. This history is also relevant to WUR as the anti-colonial intellectuals Goedkoop discusses also had a connection to the then agricultural university. Moreover, the alumni of the agricultural university, for the most part, around 65%, were working in the colony in all sorts of different roles. They worked on plantations, with the government and in tropical research stations. The introduction for this documentary will elaborate on these and other connections between the documentary, colonial history and the history of the WUR.
'Indonesië roept! Land van onderdanen' is part of an eight-part series by NPO in collaboration with the programme ‘Andere Tijden’, from 2023. In the series, Hans Goedkoop examines the late colonial history of the Dutch East Indies through the story of his grandfather, one of the leading figures on the Dutch side in the later Indonesian war of independence. In the period he examines, between 1900 and 1950, Dutch power slowly crumbled before finally disappearing completely in 1949. Anti-colonial resistance to the Netherlands grows and eventually ends in a bloody and drawn-out war. This is one of the most controversial wars waged by the Netherlands. This war is viewed very differently in the Netherlands and Indonesia. Whereas until recently the Netherlands still talked about ‘police actions’ and paid little attention to the atrocities on the Dutch side, most Indonesians see the war as their ‘Revolusi’ - the liberation from Dutch colonial oppressors. In the end, they emerged victorious. At the same time, there is a lot of dissatisfaction among some groups in Indonesia about the way the Netherlands held sway in the country. To this day, this past remains part of heated discussions in the Dutch public debate. This documentary series, and specifically the episode shown during DocuScience, takes a closer look at the colonial oppression and colonial relations that eventually led to this war of independence.
The documentary will be introduced by Larissa Schulte Nordholt. She is a historian specialized in colonial and postcolonial history and working as a postdoctoral researcher at WUR, where she is working on a book about the university's colonial past on behalf of the Executive Board. During the DocuScience, she will highlight how this larger colonial history relates to the history of WUR.
The documentary and main language is Dutch.

A group of diverse and very enthusiastic mid-career academics (coming from TU/e, WUR, UU and UMC Utrecht) collaborates around the topic of ‘porous materials’. They range from geologists, to art historians, to medical scientists, and beyond. Such unusual collaborations across disciplines support addressing complex societal challenges. They offer opportunity for academics to further explore their curiosity, by encountering other perspectives.
Despite their enthusiasm and the availability of funding, the group runs into a lack of recognition and reward for their ground-breaking work. And they learn that it takes a specific set skills to make their collaborative work meaningful and effective. The documentary ‘1+1=3’ takes you on a journey with this research team to explore barriers as well as ways to overcome them.
The documentary will be presented, followed by a facilitated discussion about (individual experiences with) recognition and appreciation with regards to interdisciplinarity. The documentary is especially relevant to policymakers in academic institutes, research funders, and researchers with an interest in interdisciplinary research, yet everyone is welcome to participate!
The documentary will be shown in Omnia and admission is free of charge. The program will begin at 19:00h, with the room opening at 18:30h. You can register via the Forms. After the program, the bar at Faculty Club Novum is open for drinks and a chat while enjoying a free drink.

But also to discuss the way forward; what are the next steps that are needed in the coming years to accelerate the building process of a truly circular and biobased economy and how we can all make an impact together.
Many studies have already found their way to the market and got implemented, but new research and collaboration remains necessary to provide the functions in everyday life that we all like to have, without the burden on climate and environment.

]]>In history, poetry is consistently held in high regard in China. Traditional forms of Chinese poetry are rhymed and express its musicality in combination with the nature of the Chinese language. In some dynasties poems were written to the set rhythms of existing tunes, and even as opera librettos. In this concert Yuqi and Shuhang are presenting songs of ancient poems that are composed in modern days for classical singers.
Yuqi Han was born in China and graduated from Utrecht Conservatory where she studied with Dutch pianist Martyn van den Hoek between 2016 and 2018. She received a score of 10 for her master final concert. While living in the Netherlands she has been active both as a soloist and a chamber musician at various main venues in the Netherlands as well as in other countries of Europe. She is also the original member of the Florestan Ensemble.
Shuhang started to follow singing lessons at age 10 in China. She studied Chinese folk singing with Huizhu Li and classical singing with Li Liue. In recent years she took classical singing lessons from hHanny van Lankeren in Wageningen. Shuhang performs in the Netherlands since 2009. In 2013, together with other members in Wageningen, she formed the traditional Chinese ensemble SweetPotato. Shuhang is a PhD candidate of Wageningen University, specialised in plant breeding against insect resistance.
Initiated by SweetPotato, this concert belongs to the concert series "Ancient Chinese Poems in Songs", "Chinese Folk Songs" and "Artistic Songs of China". The musicians are passionate to bring authentic music from China to the Netherlands and the international environment.

Microbiomes – microbial communities in specific habitats – play essential roles in life, at various scales and in many places. They are key to the multiple challenges faced by society, such as human and animal health, sustainable and safe food production, maintaining biodiversity in ecological webs, and resolving environmental pollution. We urgently need sufficient understanding of the composition, functioning, and behaviour of microbiomes in natural environments, human and animal bodies, and engineered systems in order to address today’s sustainability and health challenges.

]]>That is one of the questions being asked at the Wageningen Dialogue 'Framing the food debate' on 11 April, at Omnia. On the basis of the film The Future of Food, we will engage in a dialogue. The film shows us the paralysing effect of the opposition in the food debate and the effect on the actions to make the food system sustainable. Can we address this dichotomy and how do we bridge the gap?
Wageningen University & Research (WUR) professor of Strategic Communications Rens Vliegenthart is going to interpret the media landscape around the polarised food debate. How does media contribute to the polarisation related to this topic; Is framing inevitable? Martine Kamsma, food editor at NRC and Inge Wallage, director of communications & marketing at WUR will present their view on this topic as well. Together we will explore whether and how frames in the media effect polarization and what you can to yourself to make it work.
