Masterclass Soilless Culture participant Annelies Mosch
I don’t have a background in crop production, but I wanted to be able to have informed conversations with clients. Now I have much more insight into fertilisation strategies and substrate choices.
As an account manager at Eurofins Agro & Horti, Annelies Mosch is in daily contact with clients in the greenhouse horticulture sector. Fertilisation and substrate choice are recurring topics. But with a background outside the "green" sector, she sometimes felt she lacked a firm grasp of the technical details.
An investment in knowledge and in networks
With support from her manager, Annelies enrolled in the Masterclass Soilless Culture at Wageningen University & Research. Her goal was twofold: to deepen her knowledge and to expand her international professional network. The week-long course delivered exactly what she hoped for in-depth learning in a well-organised and inspiring setting.
The course provided her with solid knowledge of plant nutrition, fertiliser recipes, and the properties of various (sustainable) substrates. Through presentations, excursions, and intensive group work, she gained a much clearer picture of the current challenges and innovations in substrate-based growing.
I now have a much better understanding of how fertiliser recipes are constructed, and where things can go wrong in practice.
Directly applicable in practice
One insight Annelies could immediately connect to her work was the link between substrate and plant health. In practice, she has seen that crops like peppers can experience health issues when grown in inorganic substrates. Alternatives such as organic materials like coco coir or rice husks may offer a solution.
Thanks to the masterclass, she now better understands the factors at play and can give her clients more targeted advice.
The international nature of the course also proved valuable. Annelies connected with participants from the US, the UK, and Bulgaria.
The international network was a real bonus. It gave me new perspectives on how other countries deal with similar challenges.
A must for anyone in Greenhouse Horticulture
Annelies recommends the course to crop managers, consultants, and those new to the sector: “Whether you’re just starting out or have years of experience if you’re working with substrates in greenhouse cultivation, this is a truly worthwhile investment.
