Fresh Food Quality participant Emiliano Fossato Batello

This course has equipped me with the knowledge to drive meaningful advancements in maintaining fresh food quality throughout the supply chain.

With a background in pre-harvest, the postharvest world was new for Emilano Fossato Batello, Product Manager Crop Management EMEA at Johnson & Johnson. The course provided him with a broad perspective on crop quality, which proved valuable for his work.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Fresh Food Quality course, especially the hands-on demo experiment with strawberries. We tested various packaging methods, and the results clearly showed that cold storage extends shelf life while fewer perforations reduce oxygen exposure, minimising issues like bleeding and botrytis.

The course offered invaluable insights into combining modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) with 1-MCP for innovative applications in fresh food quality.

The excursion to wholesalers was invaluable; I observed the packing process for table grapes and gained insights into industry practices. Networking with a quality officer from a major supermarket deepened my understanding of retailer requirements, while discussions with fellow participants about modified atmosphere packaging for avocados enriched my learning.

Overall, this course has significantly enhanced my knowledge of postharvest technology and its applications in the fresh food industry.
