Resistance, Power and Movements

What is an effective movement? How do you feel about activism? Aren’t we all change-agents? Do you want to learn tools on how to be politically relevant? Come and find out more on these topics in our course this coming fall!

Build Your Movement, OtherWise and Michiel Köhne and Elisabet Rasch from Sociology of Development and Change group are organising a 4-ECTS capita selecta course on Activism and Movements in the fall of 2019-2020. This course is the space to explore your agency in society and how you relate to power. WUR teachers and professional trainers will bring together academic theory and practical knowledge of resistance and movements in lectures and interactive workshops. On top of this, you will be guided to design and perform your own legal public protest in small groups.

Save the date! The course will kick-off with a weekend on the 27th and 28th of september. Subsequent sessions will take place on seven Friday afternoons from 14.00 - 18.00 spread out over period 1 and 2.  (4 and 11 October, 1, 8, 15 and 22 November, 13 December)

The course will focus on the following content:

- Resistance, Power and Diversity

- Framing and storytelling

- Activist Repertoires

- Movement cultures and decision making

- Wellbeing and Operational Space

- Embodiment and Space

- Activism and the Digital Space

A major aspect of the learning process is experiential learning, besides a focus on group work and internal dynamics. You are expected to hand in the design of and a reflection on your group’s public protest and an individual reflection paper. There will be no written exam.
