Event

False positives and violence in Colombia against social leaders

Organised by Stichting Otherwise Wageningen
Date

Fri 5 October 2018 20:00 to 22:00

Friday the 5th of October Otherwise hosts a lecture about injustice and extrajudicial violence in Colombia at the Vreemde Streken. We kindly invite you to this event, where we will have the opportunity to discuss the subject.

Omar Rojas is a sociologist and ex-member of the Colombian National Police. The 5th of October he will present his book where, together with Fabián Benavides Silva, he deploys a broad and detailed research about extrajudicial executions by the Colombian military against the civil population in Colombia between 2002 and 2010, which, unlike older assessments shows that there were not 4,500 cases but 10,000. Extrajudicial executions or "Falsos Positivos" remain unpunished and continue to be denied by leading political figures who themselves are involved in these crimes. Their magnitude and systematic nature correspond to State policies during the period. Omar Rojas is currently living in exile and visiting Europe to present his book.

Julian Cortés is a PhD student at the WUR and studied Development and Rural Innovation. He will discuss elements of the political reincorporation of ex-combatants of the FARC.

Itayosara Rojas, Msc student in rural development at Ghent University, will present a brief account of the recent killings of social leaders in Colombia.

Moderator: Gerard Verschoor, WUR, Assistant professor at SDC department.

There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and discuss the subject together.
