Wageningen municipality and WUR hosted a delegation of 19 mayors for a visit and tour of Wageningen Campus. The visit of the Dutch Association of Mayors took place on Wednesday, 6 October.

The visit was part of an optional programme the municipality of Veenendaal had organised with Mayor Gert-Jan Kats (formerly SGP, now without party affiliation) to promote the region of Veenendaal. The other groups of mayors visited the Veenendaal ICT-Campus, the Poultry Expertise Centre, WorldFoodCentre and Veenendaal city.

Collaborations

The mayors who opted for Wageningen Campus were welcomed by Floor Vermeulen, mayor of Wageningen and Rens Buchwaldt, Wageningen University & Research executive board member. Rens Buchwaldt explained to the delegation that WUR is a mission-driven organisation that contributes to societal challenges they too are charged with, such as a healthy living environment and healthy population. To this end, WUR collaborates with several municipalities in the Netherlands. Moreover, he explained how the Wageningen Campus ecosystem contributes to these societal transitions in collaboration with various stakeholders and regional governments.

Campus tour

Following this oral presentation, the visitors were guided across the campus by students in three groups. This enabled them to experience how such an ecosystem might look in reality. There was plenty of opportunity for questions and networking after the tour. Hopefully, the visitors returned to Veenendaal with plenty of new ideas.
